Seaham lose but there’s lots of positives

-

Seaham lost for a second successive week against a strong and lively Seaton Carew.

However, their performance was a lot more positive than the 49-24 scoreline may suggest.

The Harbour opened the scoring when Ian Chapman took a James Bromley pass and bounced off several tackles before touching down for a try.

Seaton Carew levelled matters minutes later and they added the conversion to take them 7-5 ahead.

The hosts regained the lead when Glen Hardie out ran his markers before touching down. Grant Westwick’s conversion made it 12-7.

Carew responded with a converted try to ease two points ahead, but the Harbour regained the lead minutesbeforetheinterval.Stu Barrass took a short lineout catch and then found to John Dye, who sent a quick pass to Kurt Miller and he bulldozed over the line.

Westwick’s second conversion of the day gave Seaham a 19-14 lead at the break.

Seaham’s momentum took a blow when Stephen Noble saw yellow and Carew took advantage to record three converted tries and put a bit of a cushion between the sides.

The visitors racked up another brace of converted tries to establish a 30-point cushion, despite them having their winger yellow carded.

Seaham scored a crucial fourth try when skipper John Dixon worked a great angle and took a pass from Elliott Pratt to crash over for the line for the bonuspoint try.

Carew finished the game with 14 men after seeing their influential No8 sin-binned in the 74th minute for neck-rolling Michael Bland at a ruck.

Westwick came close to nailing a fifth try in the corner, but was tackled agonisingly short of the whitewash.

However, rather than reach over the try line to touch down he flicked a ridiculous pass over his shoulder to concede possession.

Overall, it was a good run-out for Johnny McCallum’s lads with a lot of positives to take into the next few training sessions.
