Seaham secure first win

-

Seaham secured their first league win of the season at the third time of asking with a solid 33-20 home win over a big Wallsend side.

Stephen Noble opened the scoring on six minutes when he found himself on the end of a surging forward drive and took a lovely James Bromley pop before zipping over. Connor Drinkwater added the extras.

The Harbour doubled their lead on 19 minutes when Ian Chapman followed up Graeme Steel’s elusive run and received a delightful offload before crossing and touching down under the posts. Drinkwater’s second conversion made it 14-0.

Chapman doubled his tally for the day in the 34th minute when he ended a fluid passing move involving Matty Wharton, Connor Drinkwater and Glen Hardie by touching down for a third converted try, extending the lead to 21-0.

Wallsend had the final say of the half, taking a quick tap penalty with their scrum half outpacing the Harbour defence to touch down in the corner - making it 21-5 at the break.

The visitors narrowed the deficit even further on 43 minutes when they took an attacking lineout and rumbled over the line to make it 21-10.

The Reds scored a bonus point try in the 50th minute when James Bromley launched on an elusive run and traded passes with Ian Chapman before finding Glen Hardie.

The fiery centre then blazed a trail through a packed Wallsend defence before touching down under the posts. Connor Drinkwater slotted the extras to make it 28-10.

Wallsend netted a third try on 57 minutes to pull it back to 28-15.

The Greens were on the offensive in the 72nd minute when a thumping tackle by big prop Stu Barrass forced a spillage. Mick Bland blocked the gap and Caledonian express Dugald Donachie pounced on the loose ball, haring 70 metres to touch down under the posts. Bromley’s conversion attempt was scuffed under the crossbar.

Wallsend showed an admirable never-say-die attitude and battled right to the end. Their scrum half outpaced the entire home defence and looked certain to score but Donachie denied him.
