CREW DELIGHTED AS SILKY TOUGH OUT WIN

-

Silksworth CW joint-manager Will Crew believes his side had to “tough it out” in their Total Sport Alan Hood Charity Cup Second Round win at Hartlepool FC.

Crew’s side travelled to Grayfields looking for a first win of the season against their hosts, after suffering two 3-0 defeats against Terry Hill’s side earlier in the campaign.

A brace from James Cook and a Harry Munday strike helped Silksworth to a 3-2 and Crew was delighted that they finally secured a win against the current holders of the competition.

“It was absolutely fantastic and it wasn’t easy,” explained Crew.

“Not just because they’re a great side but because the wind was horrendous.

“We were against the wind in the first-half and that made it tough.

“We took being just a goal down at half-time as a positive and we knew we would have it with us in the secondhalf.

“It was a physical game but we have come through it well.

“We took control after half-time, we adjusted well to the conditions and worked well with the wind behind.

“It was a good performance, we toughed it out against a good side that are dangerous on the break and will always score goals.

“As holders, they had the cup on display, so we knew what was at stake against the holders.

“Being holders was an added incentive for them, because they don’t want to let go of the cup, so we are really pleased with the win.”

Elsewhere in the Second Round of the competition, Gateshead Leam Rangers were 4-1 winners at Annfield Plain thanks to a brace from Robbie Hayes and goals from Shaun Bell and Alan Mulholland.

There was a single Round One tie left to play and goals from Kallum Holbrook and Scott Ryan gave Richmond Town a 2-0 home win against Darlington Town.

Sam Urwin and Grant Pressling both scored twice in Harton and Westoe CW’s 6-0 win against Coxhoe Athletic in Round One of the TWR Shipowners Charity Cup.

Wolviston moved back into second place in the Wearside League table with a 3-0 win over Boldon CA.

A first-half strike from Dmitri Kehi and two second-half goals from Junior Musandi helped the Metcalfe Park club to all three points against Sean Butler’s men, but the Boldon boss wasn’t too disheartened by his side’s display.

Butler said “We were better than the scoreline suggests.

“We missed chances and made costly mistakes and that is why we got nothing from the game.

“We are not too far away from being a decent side, we just need to get that settled squad and we will be ok.

“We are definitely a better side than our league position suggests.”

Horden CW moved to within two points of the top six with a comprehensive 4-0 home win against Windscale.

The visitors travelled to Welfare Park with just eleven men in their squad and were two goals down at half-time thanks to goals from Callum Hodgson and Robbie Renwick.

Renwick added a third after the interval and Reece McEwan rounded off a fine performance from Horden.
