Members of Horden & Peterlee Rugby Club would like to wish Becky Williams all the best as she is leaving the club for a new career with the Prison Service. Following St Bede’s RC Comprehens­ive and Byron Sixth Form July music workshop with Paul Smith the students have enjoyed another workshop working with Paul on the movement they played a part in composing. The next workshop takes place in the new year with the final performanc­e in Durham Cathedral. To book call 0191 586 6500 or visit http://www.royalgeorg­eoldshotto­n.co.uk/ Elizabeth Chester, a Year 10 pupil at St Bede’s RC Comprehens­ive and Byron Sixth Form, won a gold medal (under 63kg) and Charlotte Chester, Year 8, won a bronze medal (under 40kg) at the BJA Level 2 Judo Competitio­n in South Shields. Their younger sister Victoria, who is joining St Bede’s in September, also won a medal. Peterlee Town Council is delighted to hear the brilliant news of Peterlee winning the POP policing awards. It’s a tremendous success for the hard work of the local Police team, young people from the town, the Town Council, Groundwork, and many others. This event is a chance for officers to show how they brought about change from driving down burglaries to bridging the gap between police and youngsters. Twelve of the best projects were showcased at the force’s POP Conference at The Durham Centre with one being crowned the overall winner by judge Gloria Laycock, a professor in Crime Science at University College London. The winners with the project ‘Cultivatin­g Change’ were: Temporary Chief Inspector Lee Blakelock, PCSO Michelle Burr, Peterlee Town Mayor Scott Meikle and Olivia Ward, aged 16. The team created the Young Heroes event which honours people under 18 who have done something positive, produced the Peterlee Community Garden and secured £70,000 worth of funding from Peterlee Town Council for sustainabl­e youth provision in Peterlee. A community garden was created in Woodhouse Park with land which was donated by Peterlee Town Council and work funded by Durham County Council to give young people something they can be proud of and take responsibi­lity for, a way of bringing the community together. Young people from Groundwork North East, local schools, resident’s associatio­ns and other groups care of their own flower beds and vegetable patches. The crops are donated to food banks and care homes in the Peterlee area. Holme House Prison donated plants to support the scheme. The team have also set up a youth club in the town centre with two-hour sessions on Thursday and Fridays every week which includes an hours’ worth of engagement about topics
