Hylton WI meets monthly (not January) in South Hylton Workingmen’s Club at 1.30pm. The next meeting is on Monday, November 12. Guest speaker will be Norman Kirtlan with A day in the life of a Forensic Artist. There will also be a Christmas stall. All ladies are welcome to go along. On the third Monday of each month South Hylton Local History Society meets in the Tansy Centre at 7pm. On November 19, Phillip Curtis will give a talk on the Sunderland Jewish Community. Entrance to this very popular monthly meeting is £2, which includes tea, coffee, biscuits and a door raffle. Guests very welcome. You can also give your support by becoming a member of the society for an annual fee of £5. On Sunday, November 11, there will be a special Memorial Service in South Hylton Independen­t Methodist Church at 6pm. Everyone is welcome. The ladies of The Music Makers Choir recently presented a cheque for £922.40 to Parkinsons UK Sunderland Branch. The magnificen­t sum was the proceeds of its annual charity concert held in July. Joe Watson and Margaret Martin received the cheque and Joe thanked the ladies for their kindness and hard work in raising such a wonderful sum of money. The ladies are now busy rehearsing for a joint Christmas Concert with Shiney Row Male Voice Choir, which will be held in St Gabriel’s Church on Saturday, December 8. The 2nd Herrington Scouts would again like to thank people of the village who generously gave their continued support in the form of donations to their recent jumble sale,and to the buyers who went along in search of a bargain. The event raised £814 and on the night the Scouts also received a donation of £100 from the local Amateur Radio Club (WEARS), which uses the HQ as a base , The group would also like to thank the radio club members who assisted at the sale. The £914 will be put into a refurbishm­ent fund for the building’s toilet facilities. Wednesday, October 24, Lakeside Residents’ Associatio­n once again returned to Lakeside CA to hold its annual meeting. The meeting was well attended and the committee was once again re-elected to represent residents, who also took the opportunit­y to hold discussion­s with local councillor­s and Gentoo managers. Both associatio­ns are keen to work together on their first family Christmas event, which will be held in early December. There were plenty of helping hands to plant the first 4,000 English bluebell bulbs in West Park. The ground was dry but the task was completed. A second planting session is planed for Saturday, November 3, when community groups who have purchased additional bulbs will add to those already in the ground. Representa­tives from Herrington Townswomen’s Guild, Herrington Women’s Institute, Herrington village show group, St Chad’s Labour Party, St Chad’s Church and Middle Herrington Methodist Church are asked to meet at 10am along with any other willing helpers. East Herrington Primary Academy school will be arranging its own planting session after the half-term holiday. St Aidan’s Community Group: St Aidan’s has a memorial to all those from New Herrington Village who died in the First World War. Anyone who would like to visit is welcome. Tuesdays or Fridays are the best times to do this. A course is also being organised for people to research their families own war efforts. Ring 0191 5848388 if interested.
