Dawdon fare well as cup ties near the crucial final stages

Dawdon Welfare Park - Chilla Pizza Peterlee and District Sunday League Premier Division leaders - made progress in the John & Pat McManus Memorial Cup, beating Second Division Wingate Howden 3-2.

Marc Ruddock, Paul Atkinson and Callum Munro sent the Welfare into the third round, Dave Cummings and Thomas Young with the Howden’s reply.

In the same competitio­n, two goals apiece from Liam Adamson and Gary McAndrew along with an effort from RyanBarrow­pavedthewa­yfor Easington CIU to enjoy comfortabl­e passage into round three when they defeated Thornley Harrys Bar 5-1, Ryan Lamb netting a consolatio­n goal for Harrys.

Also making it into the next round was Peterlee Catholic Club, a Gary Shaw double seeing them defeat Easington Southside 2-0.

In the first round of the Cyril Dunn Memorial Cup, two goals from Tony Hewitt plus an effort from Liam Cockerill saw Shotton Comrades maintain their great start to the season but they had their work cut out before beating South Hetton Cricket Club 3-2, whose reply came from Liam Houghton and Alan Curl.

David Jackson was sent off for the Comrades, receiving two yellow cards.

In the quarter-final of the same competitio­n, a brace from Adam Wallace and a strike from Michael Wilson gave Seaham The Knack a 3-1 first-leg win over Hetton Lyons Cricket Club.

And in the second quarterfin­al, Horden Cricket Club - with two goals from Shaun Bentley plus efforts from Karl Arkwright and Daniel Sennett - will take a 4-2 lead into their second-leg against Wingate Grange, whose goals came from Simon Hall and Jonathan Lee.

In the second-leg of the First Division League Cup, Peterlee Hearts and Easington Leather Cap finished all-square at 2-2, the Hearts progressin­g to the semi-finals after a 6-4 aggregate win.

Carl Winstanley and Stuart Coxon were on target for the Hearts while Joe Taboun and Tom Williams replied for the Leather Cap.

In the quarter-final of the same competitio­n, Easington Victory defeated Haswell Oddfellows Arms 5-3 thanks to a brilliant hat-trick from Ian Craggs with Dylan Richardson and Kieran Blackmore also finding the target.

Brandon Collin, Andrew Daley and Andrew Armstrong scored for the Oddfellows Arms.

Sherburn United also progress to the next round thanks to a 3-0 win over New Seaham Westlea, a brace from Tom Clark and an effort from Mike Ambler handing them victory.

In the first-leg of their quarter-final tie, Philip Robinson was the hero for Peterlee Acre Rigg Social, scoring five times in their 7-0 win against East Durham FC, and it should be enough to see them reach the semi-final stage.

Scott Jackson and John Brown were also on the mark for the Celtic outfit.
