Humbledon Methodist Church’s next event will be a coffee morning on Saturday at 10.30am. There will be crafts, gifts and care stall with tea, coffee and scones available. Admission is £2, payable at the door. Humbledon Methodist Church, Ettrick Grove, holds a number of weekly activities including: Mondays, MS Society coffee morning, 10am to noon and Brownies, 6.30pm; Tuesdays Weight Watchers from 6pm; Wednesday Open Door from 11am to 1pm, when tea or coffee and toast also light lunches will be served; Thursdays Slimming World from 5pm to 7pm.

These groups have each donated £50 to enhance the planting of the initial 4,000 bulbs, provided by the St Chad’s councillors via the community chest. Staff from the Bishopwearmouth Horticultural Nursery were on hand to help dig the holes and the job was done within the hour. East Herrington Primary Academy School pupils will complete the planting for 2018. The first show is expected in May 2019 and will become a permanent feature in the park. Local resident Leslie Scott is organising a boost to the Salvation Army’s annual Homeless at Christmas Appeal with a fundraising lunch at the Rosedene, Ashbrooke, on Friday, December 7. Invitations have gone out to the business community and civic leaders but the event is open to all. Places are limited. Tickets are £30. The St Chad’s Labour Party is fielding a team in the challenge quiz organised as part of the Houghton and Sunderland South Constituency Labour Party’s annual social evening. The event will take place on Thursday, November 22, at the Hetton Centre. Tickets are £10, which includes a buffet supper and is open to all Labour supporters. Guest speaker will be Chris Bryant MP. Bishopwearmouth Horticultural Nursery is preparing for Christmas. They are now taking orders for wreaths, hanging baskets including refills and have a full collection of Christmas decorations in their shop. The garden centre is a cooperative and provides work and opportunities for adults with disabilities. The centre is open seven days a week on Chester Road. The ladies of The Music Makers Choir are busy rehearsing for a joint Christmas Concert with Shiney Row Male Voice Choir, which will be held in St Gabriel’s Church on December 8. The community groups that use Middle Herrington Methodist Church are planning a Christmas Fair on Saturday, December 8. There will be something for everyone. More details to follow. Lakeside Residents’ Association has started a new group called Stronger Together, which hopes to bring the community together, supporting loneliness, isolation, and mental health. Sessions are held in Lakeside Community Association on Fridays from 1pm to 3pm. They will include bingo, golden oldies karaoke, wellbeing support and friendship. Refresments are available. St Aidan’s Community Group runs the following activities: Lego Club, Thursday, 4.30pm to 6.30pm, free. Just pop in or book via Facebook. Beginners’ Dance Classes, Wednesday, 10am to noon, free. No experience necessary. St Aidan’s has a memorial to all those from New Herrington village who died in the First World War. All are welcome to visit on a Tuesday or Friday. The group is also running a course to help people research their families’ own war efforts on a Tuesday at 1.15pm. Seated exercise is held on Fridays from 11am to noon. No experience necessary and sessions cost £3. There is also a Golden Oldies Coffee Club & Memory Cafe from noon to 1.30pm. Good company and great chat.
