RYHOPE SHOOT DOWN STAR TO STOP THE ROT

SEAHAM RED STAR SUFFER DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF RYHOPE CW IN LOCAL DERBY

-

Ryhope CW assistant manager Stu Gooden believes a positive start earned his side three points from their derby clash with Seaham Red Star.

New signing Jack Devlin made the perfect start to life at Ryhope when he fired them into an early lead, but the sides went into halftime on level-terms as Red Star striker Michael Chilton grabbed an equaliser seven minutes before the interval.

That was as good as it got for the hosts as second-half goals from Matthew Weirs and Nathaniel Skidmore gave Ryhope a first league win in five games.

“It was a very good win and performance from the lads,” explained Gooden.

“We started the game very brightly and got an early lead through Jack Devlin.

“For the next 25 minutes we created another four or five good chances, but we didn’t take them and that came back to bite us because they got an equaliser with their first attack.

“We didn’t panic and there was only one winner in the second-half.

“We were very comfortable and should have scored more.

“We are happy to stop the rot, but we know we have to start beating the better sides.”

Sunderland RCA manager Martin Swales admitted that he was given a surprise by Guisborough Town after the Priorymen left Meadow Park with a point.

Mark Davison put RCA in front on 16 minutes, but the visitors roared back and were back level at half-time thanks to an own goal from Michael Charlton.

Guisborough took the lead on the hour-mark with a goal from Steven Roberts but substitute Kyle Davis rescued a point for Swales’ side 12 minute from time.

“If I am being honest I was surprised just how much quality Guisborough had,” said the RCA manager.

“They’ve made some good signings, they are organised and they hit us on the break.

“We made errors and that helped them, but they are a good side and they made us chase the game.

“We are disappointed with a draw and we have dropped five points in the last week.

“The lads know we have to get back to what we are good at doing and we need to do that quickly.”

League leaders Consett fell to a first home league defeat of the season as Hebburn Town inflicted a 3-1 defeat on the Steelmen.

Ben Dibb-Fuller gave the Hornets a half-time lead with a goal just after the half-hour mark, but the hosts got back level when Calvin Smith scored on the hour.

But it was Scott Oliver’s side that claimed the points thanks to well-worked team goals from Michael Richardson and Jack Robson.

Jake Stafford got the only goal of the game to give Dunston UTS all three points from their home game against Stockton Town and two Paul Brayson goals helped Newcastle Benfield to a 2-1 win at Newton Aycliffe.

Ashington put their poor form behind them to earn a 1-1 draw at Shildon.

Zak Atkinson put the Colliers ahead midway through the first-half but a Nathan Steel penalty ensured that the points were shared.

West Auckland Town were given a real scare by Whickham before winning a seven-goal thriller at the Wanted Stadium.

Goals from Adam Mitchell, Adam Burnicle and Amar Purewal helped West to a 3-1 lead at half-time.

Stephen Little got the visitors back into it early in the second-half, but the twogoal advantage was restored by Burnicle’s second goal of the day.

Andrew Bulford got the Lang Jacks back within a goal of their hosts just after the hour, but Gary Forrest’s side held on to claim the points.

Andrei Ardelean scored twice as a late substitute to help Whitley Bay to a comfortable 4-0 win against bottom-of-the-table Penrith.
