FIVE-STAR HOUGHTON PROGRESS IN TROPHY

Houghton Ladies produced a five-star performanc­e in the latest round of the Yetton Trophy to knock out a Cumbria outfit that reached the last 16 last season.

At Houghton, both home rinks won, Joan Watt, Eleanor Barren, Val Bambrough and Joan Rodgerson cruising to a 25-11 victory over E.Gass while Sam Richardson, Ruth Turnbull, Brenda Robson and Jenny Smith beat J.Clifford 27-13.

At Carlisle, Margaret Metcalf, Margaret Eggleston, Joan Baker and Ann Banks defeated Cindy Edmondson 28-18, while Maureen Hall, Liz Morris, Audrey Vout and Norma Stephenson went down 27-12 to Sue Kirkpatric­k, leaving the overall score 92-68 in favour of Houghton, who meet Darlington in the next round after their 93-73 win over Durham.

In the Plate, South Shields Ladies beat West Denton 7962, with Pam Carlin, Karen Paterson, Irene Kirkley and Ann Upsall drawing 21-21 against Diane Archer while Nina Riches, A.Jameson, J.Craig and P.Bryne beat Annie Lennie 17-15.

At West Denton, both away rinks won, Jackie Tallack, J.Beaney, Jean Chapman and Maureen Charles defeating N.Craig 20-15 and M.Elliott, Brenda Harper, M.Paton and D.Sproates winning 21-13 against A.Moore to seal a 17-shot win overall, and set up a tie against Eden, who beat Hartlepool 91-86.

Houghton and South Shields also went head to head in the Denny Cup, Shields posting a 26-shot win.

At Houghton, Joe Sutherland, David Armstrong, Jimmy McAdoo and Bryan Henderson Snr beat Scott Baker, Paul Sainthouse, Josh Halcrow and Shaun McIntosh 28-17 while Mal Baker, Richard Thorpe, Alan J Dunn and Frankie Froud lost 25-6 to Phil Dixon, Mal Peach, Gary Farquhar and David Bolt. At the Jack Clark Centre, both Shields squads recorded wins, Neal Ridley, Kris Storf, James Sneller and Ian McIntosh good value for their 22-9 victory over Tony Grimes, Bob Johnson, Tom Patterson and Peter Thomson while Dave Paterson, Josh Minto, Stewart Hubbard and Ian Riches ran out 21-16 winners over Eric Downes, Stevie Tindale, Dan Todner and Richie McKie.

In the last 32, Shields will face Hornsea for the first time, after they dispatched a strong York team.

The other local tie saw Hartlepool beat Darlington 74-37 to set up a classic against Denny holders Cumbria, who eased past Copeland by 66 shots.

In the Denny Plate, Durham defeated West Denton 88-62 and will next face Blackpool NH, while Great Aycliffe will face Selby after defeating Thornaby 97-70.

Elsewhere, South Shields beat Hartlepool 10-6, Nina Riches defeated Dawn Jackson 21-8 in the singles but Shaun McIntosh losing the men’s tie 21-17 to Glenn Skipp.

In the mixed pairs, Jackie Tallack and David Bolt lost 21-9 to Paul Hartley, but the tie was decided by the mixed triple of Marilyn Robson, James Sneller and Gary Farquhar defeating Paul Mosley 15-11 and the mixed four of Ann Upsall, P.Bryne, Jaxon McKenna and Shaun McIntosh holding on to a 21-19 victory over Marc Squirrell.

The Parks provide the opposition in the next round, while Durham were beaten 12-4 by Blackpool and Darlington defeated Eden 14-2 to set up a clash against each other.

In the latest round of the seniors inter-club fixtures, the Houghton Sancroft won a thriller away at Gateshead B 38-37.

Sancroft’s top rink was Joe Sutherland, Jimmy Swinney, Freddie Fletcher and Ian Whorlton who defeated Peter Hudspeth 16-7, an advantage cancelled out as George Brown, Barney Walsh, David Sim and John Jones lost 16-7 to Ian Patterson.

However, the 4-1 points win was sealed by Alfie Ferguson, Trevor Joicey, David Wright and Frankie Froud who sneaked home 15-14 against R.Pennycock.

Next is a must-win home clash against South Shields. Latest Standings – Group 2 – Darlington B 4-15½, Hartlepool A 3-9½, Ferryhill 3-7½, South Shields B 4-7½, Houghton Gilpin 4-5.

South Shields’ David Bolt will look to emulate Durham’s Gary Smith’s 2016 Open Singles Grand Final success this weekend at Potters, battling for the £1600 first prize, while Durham’s Michael Laydon will also feature due to a number of withdrawal­s.

The next round of the Egham Trophy takes place tomorrow with South Shields facing Hornsea.
