Marrs’ attacks are too much for a dogged Houghton team

-

An Ethan Marrs hat-trick inspired Sunderland U15s to a late rally and, eventually, a 5817 win over a dogged Houghton team.

The winger sparkled in a lacklustre showing from the home side, who went in at halftime 22-17 up against their neighbours after a string of uncharacteristic errors.

Marrs led the revival against Houghton, who being understrength, initially borrowed three players from Sunderland in the match at The Limes.

Houghton’s forwards competed aggressively against a passive home pack, who took 30 minutes to find their way into the game.

The pick of Sunderland’s forwards were ball carriers Russell Chapman-Smith, Jack Howell and James Docherty, who continually looked for work off the ball.

Number eight Adam Williams crossed for the home side in the opening half, followed by centre Vincent Hessel, Tom Howe converting the tries.

Houghton cut the deficit with three tries from a series of forward moves

As the second half loomed, Sunderland found another gear and began to stretch their lead.

Winger Thomas Hales cut inside for a try under the posts, followed by further scores from Josh Jobling, Hessel and Howell.

Hooker David Matloch grabbed a try from a strong drive, before making way for Alex Ryan, shifting to the back row.

Further conversions were added by Adam Sheils and, in the last play, prop James Docherty to give the scoreline a somewhat flattering look.
