GOAL KING CLEUGHIE SEALS IVY TRIUMPH

SUNDERLAND & DISTRICT MILL VIEW OVER-40S FOOTBALL

-

Ivy Legends could only muster the bare 11 again to travel to Newton Aycliffe Cobblers to face a team that stuck six past them without reply in the cup fixture at Hylton Road the week before.

After a goalless first half, Ivy kicked off into the wind and defended stoutly as Cobblers drove forward. Eventually the dam burst and Sean Duffy was unluckily beaten after a rebound fell kindly for Cobblers’ star man.

Ivy kept their shape and pushed for an equaliser which eventually came when Michael Cleugh guided a lovely left-foot shot across the keeper and into the net.

Inspired, Ivy went one better with Cleugh again slipping the ball past the keeper and in off the post after latching onto Boyle’s brave header.

After that, they defended like their lives depended on it, and deservedly held on to gain their first win of the season. Penshaw Catholic Club went through to the next round of the Robson Pattison Cup with a 3-1 win against a tough DarlingtonShuttleandLoom side.

Early exchanges were even with Darlington playing the better football until a long ball deep into the Darlington half was chased down by the hard-working Chris Moody who nicked the ball away from the full back, raced into the box and slotted the ball into the net.

The second Penshaw goal wasn’t far away and it was a great team goal with Mark Liddle and Paul Taylor working an opening for Wes Hood to fire in.

Darlington continued to press in the second half and were rewarded with a wellworked goal of their own. They then went in search of an equaliser but it was Penshaw who made the game safe with another good goal, created by Liddle again and converted by substitute ‘Pecka’ Pescod.

Lateinthegame,Penshaw could have had a fourth when sub Luke Charlesworth was chopped down in the process of rounding the keeper just outside the box.

The resulting free kick coming to nothing. Man of the match was Penshaw centre half Damian Maw.

Hartlepool Workies were in divisional cup action also at home to Ferryhill Greyhound and ran out 1-0 winners to move into the quarter-finals.

Willow Pond and Houghton Cricket shared six goals in a draw.

Houghton went ahead when a high crossfield ball was brought down on the corner of the 18-yard box by star man Keith Ridley, who despatched the ball in style, low into the far corner.

Pond soon replied after Ralph Dodd had his shot saved brilliantly by Cricket keeper Michael Potter. The defence didn’t clear which left Gary Golightly the chance to fire home the equaliser.

Willow were piling on the pressure and from a corner Andy Norman’s bullet header out them ahead as he steamed in onto a bad clearance by the Cricket defence. The game was end to end and a counter attack on the right wing by Micky Forster had his low ball across the six-yard line cut out by Pond captain Lee Brown only for Hugh Daglish to follow in and equalise.

The away side snatched the lead when Willow defender Andy Tones was blinded by the sun and chose to turn and pass back to Davis but his pass was poor, allowing Forster to capitalise and make it 3-2.

The second half saw Andy Tilbury replace injured Davis in goal for Pond and he was called into action from the kick-off as he tipped over a rasping drive from Ridley.

Willow created chances, with Dodd and David Kelly seeing their shots well saved by Potter and making Cricket defend pressure from corners. Pond equalised from a good passing move up the pitch by David Laws and Kelly to set up Dodd who beat the impressive Potter with a deft close range shot.

As the minutes ticked away, Pond should have won the game with two gilt-edged opportunities spurned by Dodd and Laws.

In Division Two, Grindon recorded a 5-1 win at North Shields Pineapple under very windy conditions.

The home side look the lead after five minutes when Billy Simmons scored, but Grindon were doing very well against the wind and equalised through Griffiths after 20 minutes.

Five minutes later, Pineapple were awarded a penalty, but it was brilliantly saved by Grindon keeper Jobson.

Grindon seemed to handle the wind and scored again after 35 minutes when Bland netted from 12 yards.

In the second half Grindon, with the wind behind them, tore Pineapple to bits. Alan Ridley scored with a diving header before Cliff made it 4-1.

The final goal came when Alan Ridley scored his second of the game.
