‘The good times are coming back’ – fans enjoying season

-

Sunderland fans were over the moon at the turnaround in the club’s fortunes ahead of yesterday’s record breaking crowd.

Sean Coxon, from Wallsend, said: “I live in America and come back every year.

“When I came back last year, it was Boxing Day and we went to Brammall Lane – it was shocking.

“I am delighted with how things have changed.”

James Birchall, from Allendale, who was at the game with son Charlie: “It is just fantastic,” he said.

“We have had a tough time of it of late, but now the good times are coming back.”

Val Halliday, from Springwell Village, is 78 and had been coming to the match all her life. “It is excellent,” she said. “There is a real feel-good factor.

“I have seen the Netflix series and it is brilliant.

“My husband is a Newcastle supporter and he loved it as well.”

Heather Neville, from Seaburn, said: “I have been coming since I was 14, so it must be 57 years now. “It is great at the moment. “There is a lot of hope for the future – it is better than it has been for the last ten years.

“I think probably the best thing that happened to us was relegation to League One because it meant having to change.

“It changed the mindset of the whole club.”

Maria Gray, 75, from Springwell Village, has been a season ticket holder since 2003.

“It is very good at the moment,” she said.

“It is nice to see us winning at home and to see players who want to win.

“If they go one down, they don’t buckle under, they just get on with it.”
