Ex-Star man Palmer on target to give Shildon narrow victory

-

Shildon moved into the top eight of the Northern League Division One table with a narrow win at local rivals Newton Aycliffe., writes MARK CARRUTHERS.

The two sides had shared six goals in their previous meeting in August, but just one goal was needed for the Railwaymen to claim atll three points at Moore Lane.

Former Seaham Red Star defender David Palmer was the match-winner for Shildon as his goal just after the hourmark helped them to a second win inside four days.

Stockton Town failed to bounce back from their weekend defeat against Shildon as they fell to a home defeat against Guisborough Town.

Nathan Guru headed the visitors in front on 10 minutes, but they were pegged back by an equaliser by Anchors captain Adam Nicholson.

Guru got his second of the day just before the half-hour mark and a Mark Robinson penalty extended their Priorymen’s lead on 38 minutes.

Fred Woodhouse pulled one back for Stockton on the brink of half-time, but they were unable to find an equaliser, despite creating a number of chances during a hectic second half.

Billingham Town extended their unbeaten run to 22 league games after a goalless draw with neighbours Billingham Synthonia.

The Northern League Division Two leaders made life difficult for themselves at Bedford Terrace after Luke Hogan was dismissed for a dangerous tackle nine minutes before half-time.

Town were reduced to nine men when Dan Flounders was shown a second yellow card in the closing-stages, but his side held on to continue their remarkable start to the season.

Matty Crossen’s lastminute equaliser helped Redcar Athletic take a point from their trip to Thornaby.

Promotion-chasing Thornaby looked as if they were going to secure a much-needed win after goals from Kyran Clark and Ben Jackson helped them put Adam Preston’s opener behind them.

But Crossen popped up to grab a dramatic equaliser as the game headed into injurytime and ensured that the spoils were shared.

Hartlepool FC moved into the top six of the Wearside League table with a dominant 4-1 win at Horden CW.

A Robbie Renwick goal gave the hosts a half-time lead, but a second-half hat-trick from Jamie Tumilty and a Mike Snowdon header gave Terry Hill’s side all three points.
