Some midweek activities in South Hylton Independen­t Methodist Church are up and running again after a winter break. Guides meet in the school room every Thursday, during term-time, at 6.30pm. There is a whole programme of activities including games, camping and outings for girls aged 10 to 14. A great way to make new friends. There is a Ladies’ meeting every Monday from 2pm to 3pm. All are welcome. This is also in the school room. Entrance to these meetings is through the red door a the rear of the church. Children from Reception to Year 6 can go along to the church at 10.30am every Sunday. There are lots of special activities to get involved in. Herrington Heritage Society AGM will take place Tomorrow at 7pm at Middle Herrington Methodist Church. A new constituti­on will be adopted, officers elected and a programme of events will be determined. The meeting is open to all interested in heritage matters. The meeting will feature an illustrate­d talk on the Hetton to Sunderland waggon way, which passed through Herrington from the early 19th century. Joshua Waddell, from East Herrington, is now the world under 17 champion in wheelchair epee. In December he was the youngest person at the Japan Senior World cup competing against fencers many times his age. Joshua has been financiall­y supported by the Sunderland Sports Fund, which aims to help him attend the Paralympic games in 2020. Sunderland Sports Fund was establishe­d 20 years ago and is a group of volunteers who raise money and disperse grants to keep young people competing in their sport in-order they fulfil their potential and enhance the reputation of Sunderland. Leslie Scott, chair of the Sports Fund, thanked Harry Harrison, from Sunderland Strollers, for their continued support of the fund and their sponsorshi­p of Joshua as he and his family face the expense of competing on the world stage. Christine last visited the club about six years ago, when meetings were held in The Royalty Theatre. A soup lunch will be held at St Nicholas Church in The Haver Hall on Saturday at 12.30pm. The cost is £3 and includes a choice of soup, bread, tea or coffee and homemade cakes. Money raised goes towards church funds. There will be another soup lunch on Saturday, February 23. Donations of any unwanted Christmas presents can be handed in to Deptford and Millfield Community Centre, Hylton Road. Money raised from these will help keep the centre running. As part of the 70th Anniversar­y of Bishopwear­mouth Choral Society (BCS) events, a Singing Day will be held on Saturday, February 9, at Sunderland Minster. It has been organised by the committee and led by Aidan Oliver, one of the UK’s leading Choral Directors, working across the whole spectrum of symphonic, liturgical and contempora­ry music. It serves tea, coffee and fruit juice, teacakes, crumpets and homemade scones all at reasonable prices. In conjunctio­n with the cafe, there is a games afternoon including Scrabble, dominoes, card games, boules and other games, which start at 1pm. Library section is open as usual. All profits go towards purchasing new books for the library. All are welcome. Sunderland Antiquaria­n Archives at the Sunderland Antiquaria­n Heritage Centre, 6 Douro Terrace, are open for research on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9.30am to noon.

He worked with students on how to keep them inspired and equipped with proven strategies to help them to succeed. Students had a fantastic time and hopefully they went away feeling aspired to do their very best every day.
