Councillor works to make community’s roads safer

-

A problem-road crossing has been relocated, thanks to the work of a Grindon councillor keen to keep road-users safe.

After hearing reports of several nearmisses at a crossing on the Broadway next to the Grindon Mill Inn, Labour councillor, Debra Waller enquired about moving it to a safer place on the road.

She organised a consultation with residents, and it was agreed to move the crossing to the other side of the road, something that will reduce risks for pedestrians and motorists who use the busy street.

Coun Waller also raised issues with speeding on the road next to the petrol station, and following a speed survey, conducted by the council, a new Tucan crossing will soon be installed at this spot, so residents can access the bus stops and cross the road safely.

Coun Waller said: “I’m really pleased to see how quickly we have been able to address the concerns of our residents, and put in place measures that will make it safer for them to cross what are very busy roads.

“It will make a big difference to people who live in the area.”

As well as addressing issues in Grindon, Coun Waller has also addressed concerns of people in North Farm, introducing new ‘drive slow’ signs near popular play spots.

The signs aim to encourage drivers to take more care at the entrance to the community, to protect children as they play.

The signs have had such an impact that residents in other parts of the community have requested new signs for their streets.

Coun Waller, who represents Sandhill ward, is now pushing for new railings to be installed on Gleneagles Road at the entrance to Grindon Infants School, to protect families walking close to a busy road.

The safety issue was highlighted recently at a full council meeting of Sunderland City Council.
