Beacon of Light sports festival set to kick-off

It’s time to get sporty as the First Active Sunderland Sport Festival of the year takes place at the Beacon of Light next week.

Staged on Thursday, February 21, from noon to 3pm, the BIG Indoor Sports Festival sees the launch of the Active Sunderland BIG Events and Community Sports Festival programme for 2019.

The Family Fun halfterm Indoor Sports Festival has a full programme of activities for only £2 per person including: table tennis, basketball, BIG feet football, dodgeball, inflatable speed cage and dartboard, swingball , urban golf, hockey and dance.

Sunderland City Council Cabinet Member for Communitie­s and Culture, Coun John Kelly said: “The Beacon of Light adds to our network of first -class sport and leisure venues across the city, providing people of all ages and abilities with easy, affordable access to a range of leisure and fitness activities.

“This is a fantastic new venue for the Indoor Sports Festival and I hope everyone will come along and enjoy the activities at the first Active Sunderland event of 2019.

“There’s no need to prebook for this event, just turn up on the day and register. We are expecting the half-term sports festival to be hugely popular with a lot of families taking part in a wide range of fun activities.”

The family fun half-term sports festival is also the event’s de but for the new Active Sunderland­lion mascot who will be given a name decided by an online poll, and join SAFC’s Samson in helping to lead the fun throughout the day.

The day will also see the launch of the 2019 city events programme including the BIG 3K Run, BIG Bike Ride, BIG Walk and more.
