Sunderland Echo

Strength of spirit shines on

-

When the going gets tough, the people of Sunderland get going.

Time and time again on the pages of the Sunderland Echo we feature stories of people coming together in times of adversity. Today is no exception. The tragic death of Connor Brown has seen the community once again rally in support of one of their own.

An online fund set up to help his family has raised thousands of pounds in no time at all. And on our pages friends and colleagues have been quick to share their thoughts and pay tribute to the young man.

In another story, again we see the community coming together to help their own.

A sickening attack on a voluntary group which supports children with autism and their families has devastated these communityminded individuals.

But our photograph today sums up the spirit of Wearside.

No sooner had the damage been caused to the group’s sensory garden than volunteers were on site trying to put the damage right again.

As our story reveals, vandals had broken in and ripped wood from fences and stolen equipment which had brought so much pleasure to autistic children. But our community has reacted in the best way possible.

Words can’t describe just how the public feel towards those who bring misery and despair on our community. But the strength of that community is summed up by how it reacts to adversity.

As these stories reveal, the Wearside community is as strong as ever.

When the going gets tough, the community of Sunderland gets going better than most. Long may it continue.
