Get ready to visit the event of the month, Sunderland Minster Vintage and Craft Fayre on Saturday, March 2. Enjoy perusing the stalls selling knitted items, hand crafted greetings cards, cakes, jewellery, wooden items, and much more. Groundwork, funded for their work here in St Michael’s by the East Area Committee of Sunderland Council and supported by the three local ward councillor­s, is organising a community clean-up on Saturday, March 9, from 10am to 11am, meeting outside the Ivy House, Worcester Terrace. This is part of the ‘Reclaim the Lanes’ scheme and local residents/helpers are encouraged to call along; all equipment is provided. St Nicholas Church, off Queen Alexandra Road/Dunelm South, working within the St Michael’s Ward Community Connector Hub project, holds its next ‘Open Arms’ session on Wednesday, March 6, commencing 10.30am until noon. On offer is tea, coffee and biscuits, but most of all support and a listening ear to carers who need a short break or indeed anyone feeling isolated or lonely. In addition, St Nicholas, under the same project, is holding its next ‘Care and Share’ session on Saturday, March 9, from 12.30pm until 2pm. Here a safe, welcoming, setting is on offer to anyone in need, vulnerable or lonely who can come along and enjoy a free cooked meal and dessert, plus soft drinks/coffee or tea. Thornholme Residents’ Associatio­n will hold its next meeting on Monday, March 4, at Ashbrooke Sports Club, commencing 6pm. Sunderland Ladies Probus Club holds its next meeting this Thursday with coffee at 10am and the meeting itself commencing at 10.30am. The guest speaker will be Judith Phillips whose talk is entitled ‘Working with the Archives’ (of Bowes Museum). The meeting takes place at the usual venue, St John’s Church, Ashbrooke. Early notice for your diary is Saturday, March 23, for the Spring Concert being held by Sunderland Symphony Orchestra, entitled ‘Spring into Jazz’, with guest soloist Megan Robinson (flute). The venue is West Park Church, Stockton Road, (opposite the bus interchang­e and Park Lane Metro station), and the concert begins at 7.30pm. Tickets (at the door) are £8, with under 16s and students both £5. The programme will include: Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin, The Entertaine­r by Scott Joplin, Carnival of Venice and music by John Dankworth and Shostakovi­ch.
