The boss of a series of city centre bars is putting her door staff through extended first aid training and drafting in bodycams and additional CCTV to ensure people can enjoy a safe night out in Sunderland.

Lorraine Griffiths, who runs The Point, Arizona, Glitter Ball, Ttonic and Chaplins, said she wants to ensure her team is prepared for all eventualities as they work in the venues.

While security officers undergo a day’s first aid training, which centres on giving them skills to resuscitate, they will now undergo a three-day course so they will be able to offer further help to those in need.

Extra CCTV cameras are being added, while some members of the door team will be given body-worn technology to help deter trouble and capture footage of incidents.

Lorraine said: “We are trying our best to make it safe for people in this quarter of the city, so there’s Port of Call, Gatsby and the others, so we have our security teams, check for underage and look out for people.

“We sent our staff on a oneday course, but it just set me thinking, and this three-day first aid course will be more intensive and look at dealing with cuts, when someone has stepped on a bottle with their foot if they’re taken their shoes off for example.

“If other pubs are also interested in it, they can join in too.”

She added the links between the police and city centre businesses were also tight, with door staff and officers quick to act if concerns are raised about worrying behaviour or suspicions weapons are being carried.
