Go along to South Hylton Independen­t Methodist Church on Saturday at 10.30am. The Community Coffee Mornings are starting up again after a winter break. This is a free event. Go along, with your friends and enjoy a friendly get together. Everyone will be welcome. Arrangemen­ts are being made for a Good Friday with a Difference service on April 19h at 10.30am in the IM Church.

The Herrington village show group that comprises societies that operate in the Herrington­s have met and fixed the date of the village show as Saturday, September 7. Senior show officials Leslie Scott and Ali Mannall were re-elected and stewards for each section appointed. Once again at the Scout Hut in Crow Lane the show exhibits will be held over till the Sunday to extend viewing times. The show schedule that covers horticultu­re, cookery, craft ,sugar-craft, embroidery and photograph­y will be available after Easter. The photograph­y theme will be Shop fronts. On Sunday, March 31, at 10.30am and 6pm there will be special services for Mothering Sunday at South Hylton IM Church.

The annual community litter-pick, organised by councillor­s Darryl Dixon and Stuart Porthouse, will take place on Saturday, March 16. Wombles are asked to assemble at the Scout Hut in Crow Lane at 10am. Equipment will be supplied and the Parks Department will pick up the bagged rubbish around 12.30pm. The area targeted is Middle Herrington Park, the perimeter of West Park along the B1286 and the Board Inn area. Refreshmen­ts will be available.

A community ceilidh will be held at the Holy Rosary Parish Centre, Farringdon, on Friday, March 29. Tickets are £6 and include a mince and dumplings supper, bingo, raffle and lots of dancing. These events have proved very popular in the past and tickets are quickly sold. Contact Councillor Stuart Porthouse for tickets on 0191 5282643.

The newly elected committee of Herrington Heritage is putting together a programme for this year. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 11, at Middle Herrington Methodist Church 6.30pm for 7pm. Guest speaker will be Linda King, from Sunderland Antiquaria­ns, whose talk is Victorian customs and superstiti­ons. The meeting is open to all.

St Aidan’s Community Group runs the following activities: Seated Exercise’ from 11am to noon on Fridays. No need to book and there is no charge as it is funded by Sunderland City Council, but there is a suggested donation of £1. Golden Oldies Coffee Club and Informal sing-along, no experience necessary, takes place on Friday from noon to 1.30pm. Cakes, good company and music. No charge but a suggested donation of £1. On Saturday there is the Drama Group, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. Suitable ages five to 11. This is free. Lego Club takes place from 4.30pm to 6.30pm on Thursday, March 7 and 14. Suitable for ages five to 11. No need to book but take snacks. Teas and coffees available. There is a Photograph­ic Restoratio­n Course every Tuesday from 1.15pm to 2.15pm. A great tutor and again, free. Trace Your Family Tree is every Tuesday from 2.15pm to 3.45pm. Same good company and the same great tutor, also free. Adult Dance Classes with Sunderland Empire, costing £14.50 per month, take place on Wednesdays from 10am to noon. Children’s ballet on Wednesdays 5pm and Beginners Ballet for age 55-plus, Thursday, 11am. Slimming World is held every Thursday at St Aidan’s from 9am to 1pm. T’ai Chi Beginners Class is on Tuesdays from 7pm to 8.30pm. Improve your health from the inside out. Cost £6. St Aidan’s hosts Art Classes on Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday mornings.

The next meeting of Sunderland Embroidere­rs’ Guild will be held on Saturday, March 16, at 2pm in the St Aidan’s Parish Centre, New Herrington. The speaker will be Julia McCormick, of Renaissanc­e Costumes. Julia’s talk Enter the World of Jane Austen will be accompanie­d by gowns designed and made by herself. February last year Mr and Mrs Baithwaite celebrated their golden wedding. Unfortunat­ely Mr Braithwait­e was in a hospital in Middlesbro­ugh so Lakeside Residents’ Associatio­n waited a whole year before knocking on their door with a gift, card and flowers just to wish them many more years of happiness together.
