Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent in the Church’s calendar. There will be a service in All Saints’ Church at 7.30pm. Do you ever ask yourself why so many people in our neighbourh­ood are suffering, what causes injustice and oppression? Have you been affected by benefit cuts? Do you use a food bank? At North Street Methodist Church, Silksworth (beside the allotments), we are following a Lent course based on the award-winning film I Daniel Blake, which will give us an opportunit­y to confront many difficult questions, including, Where does Jesus fit in to all of this and what can we do in response? It doesn’t matter where you come from, if you are a person of faith or not, if these are things that concern or worry you, go along every Monday through Lent, 7 for 7. 30pm. The first session is on March 11. Tickets, £2.50, can be obtained by telephonin­g 0191 5239371 or pay at the door Hetton and Eppleton Community Hall in Front Street will be holding its Spring Fair on Saturday, March 16, at 10 am. There will be raffles, tombola, cake street, new stall, hand crafted cards, white elephant stall, books, toys and lots more. Refreshmen­ts will also be available. Boldon Churches Together will begin their midday Lent short service followed by a light lunch on Thursday, March 14, at St George’s Church on Front Street in East Boldon, on Thursday, March 21, at East Boldon Methodist Church, March 28 at United Reformed Church, April 4 at The Sacred Heart RC Church on New Road, Boldon Colliery, and on April 14 at St Nicholas Church in West Boldon Village. All proceeds to Christian Aid. West Boldon Residents’ Associatio­n will meet on Wednesday, March 13, in The Wheasheaf in West Boldon at 10am. Anyone interested in any aspect of village life is welcome to drop-in to any of these meetings. Light refreshmen­ts will be served.
