Happy and healthy time for kids

-

Youngsters at a Sunderland primary are determines to be happy and healthy.

The staff and student at Farringdon Academy took part in Happy Healthy Me Week recently to inspire them to look after themselves.

Lauren Clarke, a spokesman for the Inspire Multi Academy Trust, which Farringdon Academy is part of, said the children had a really good week.

She said: “The mental health and wellbeing of staff and children is important to everyone at Farringdon School.

“As a school we work hard to support and develop the emotional and physical wellbeing of everyone.

“We already as a school have lots of exciting ways to promote wellbeing through programs and interventions and we held our Happy Healthy Me Week, which has aimed to promote the physical and emotional wellbeing of both staff and children alike.”

Over the course of the week everyone took time to explore keeping their bodies healthy by making healthy foods and exploring the local area on walks.

Classes held their own mindfulness sessions helping children focus their attention and calming their minds.

Lauren said: “We were very lucky to have a number of visitors join us for the week. Jitta bugs North East delivered a wonderful yoga program across the school teaching the children balance and relaxation.

“We had the circus visiting us, teaching children circus skills and providing lots of entertainment.”

She said Newcastle Eagles offered their support by providing basketball sessions and Zoo Lab provided lots of interesting animals for the children to explore and hold.

Lauren said: “The response from the children has been phenomenal and the week was a wonderful opportunity for staff and children to spend quality time together.”

Year 6 pupil, Preston Cook, who is head boy at the Archer Road school, said: “I thought the circus was awesome. Our visitors couldn’t have been nicer; it was a great treat.”

Lace Johnston, a Year 3 member of the school council, said: “The exercise and yoga has been really good because if your body is healthy your mind will be healthy too. I have really enjoyed this week.”

Emily Clayton, head girl, added: “The whole week has been a great experience for everyone because we have had a chance to spend time with our teachers and have fun together. It has made us all feel closer to each other.”
