City right in going for gold ...

- By Richard Ord

If Sunderland is serious about going for gold and hosting the Commonwealth Games, then they will be hoping the bid will be a case of third time lucky!

In recent years they have had two disappointing defeats when bidding for major honours.

They were one of the cities involved the nation’s football World Cup 2118 bid, but saw England miss out to Russia.

And just recently, the City of Culture 2021 bid failed at the final hurdle when they were pipped at the post by Coventry for the prestigious title.

Despite losing out on two high-profile bids, the city has drawn strength from their endeavours.

Both these bids showed that Sunderland has every right to be in the mix when it comes to major honours and events.

The Commonwealth Games bid is no exception.

Instead of asking why, we should be asking why not? That’s certainly the stance of Sunderland City Council who have included the bid in future plans for the city.

Council Leader Graeme Miller said: “This is part of our vision to be a dynamic, vibrant and healthy city and grow our status as an Events City, showcasing Sunderland’s capability for delivering a robust and diverse programme of events.

“Why shouldn’t Sunderland be looking at hosting the Commonwealth Games? I think it shows we’re a modern 21st century city with aspirations to be hosting events like this that will showcase Sunderland to the world.”

If there were medals for ambition and effort, Sunderland would be winning gold. Here’s hoping it’s third time lucky and the city earns that podium place to host the Commonwealth Games.
