Historical fun on the menu at Hylton Castle

-

Medieval mayhem is coming to Sunderland.

The children’s play-park in Craigavon Road, Hylton Castle, will play host to an afternoon of family friendly medieval-themed events and activities on Sunday, May 26 from 11am to 4pm.

A day filled with entertainment will include programmes from costumed characters, wood turning demonstrations, children’s themed craft activities, ferret racing and the chance to join in historic games such as tug of war, quoits and wheelbarrow racing, with archery, weapon displays and the chance to sample a hog roast (charges apply) to re-create the atmosphere and surroundings of the medieval era.

The ‘Medieval Mayhem’ family-focussed event is being staged by Sunderland City Council Heritage team, Hylton Castle Project Board and Hylton Castle Trust.

Sunderland City Council Executive Director of Neighbourhoods, Fiona Brown said: “This fun, family event is celebration of our city’s local cultural heritage, and allows us to demonstrate the massive part Hylton Castle has played in the development of our community, the city and the region.

“We hope people from across Sunderland and the local community will come along to support and enjoy the day and get a flavour of the kind of programme that will soon be hosted in the fully-restored building and grounds of Hylton Castle when it reopens to the public as a new cultural, visitor and education centre later this year.”

The programme is scheduled across the day, with the majority of activities available as drop-in throughout the day.

Please note there is no parking in or around the castle area.

Parking is available at Castleview Academy and the Bunnyhill Centre (both within walking distance of the site).

Please be considerate of local residents if driving to the event and park away from all main roads into the site, in order to make the event safe for all visitors and to prevent congestion.
