No half measures from cops

- By Richard Ord

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.

It’s an oft-used phrase that could easily be applied to the problems at The B Bar in Southwick.

Pubs and clubs across our city are at risk of trouble on and around their premises every week of the year.

The nature of the business involves that potentially volatile mix of alcohol and crowds.

What matters is putting the safety and enjoyment of the punters first, and you do that not in isolation, but by working with community organisations and, in particular, the police.

Fail to cooperate and you are inviting trouble. It’s not a case of if, but when.

And the consequences of this failure are clearly outlined by the police today.

Violent attacks which were then not reported to the police have seen the pub forced to close after its premises’ licence revoked.

Inspector Don Wade, of Northumbria Police, welcomed the decision and said: “We work hand-inhand with licensed premises to ensure they offer a safe environment for the public, abide by the law and uphold their licensing conditions.

“However, the owner and members of staff at The Buffs have clearly fallen short of this requirement, and have shown little desire to cooperate with police at any stage.

“There have been a number of instances of serious violence committed on the premises, as well as several breaches of its licence conditions. As a result, we were left with no option but to make an application to revoke the licence.”

The tough stance taken is the correct one and sends out a strong crime and safety message to all pub and club owners.
