Sunflower Day on Friday, June 21. They are hoping to turn the whole of Sunderland (and beyond) yellow. All businesses, schools, community groups and indeed everybody across the region are encouraged to wear yellow to show their support, with donations to the hospice completely optional. This is a great opportunit­y for people to have some fun and share photos and show why St Benedict’s Hospice means so much to them. If you still have an uncollecte­d envelope and you would like to contribute, or if you did not get an envelope this year, please consider bringing your donation to All Saints’ parish hall or church, Cleadon Methodist Church, or ring 0191 536 3346 for it to be collected. This week is the biggest fundraiser of the year for this excellent charity, which does fantastic work across the world for those in poorer circumstan­ces. Cleadon Village History Society meets next Tuesday, May 28, at 7.15pm in All Saints’ parish hall. The subject this month is ‘The Stephenson­s’ by Walter Carr. Entry is £2 and there will be light refreshmen­ts. Everyone is welcome to come. Dokan Karate Club meets in All Saints’ parish hall on Thursdays at 5pm for juniors and at 7pm for adults. All ages and abilities are catered for, so just come to a session or telephone 07939 130411 for more informatio­n. At Newbottle St Matthew’s Church Hall the weekly coffee mornings with boot sales and the lunch club will continue on Thursdays throughout the summer. Many bargain books can be obtained from 9.30am to 10.30am, and a substantia­l meal is available at a realistic price from 12.30pm to 1.30pm, and all are welcome. The next surgery by Shiney Row councillor­s Anne Lawson, Mel Speding and Geoff Walker will be in Penshaw Village Community Hall from 1pm to 2pm on Wednesday, May 29, and residents are welcome to raise and discuss any relevant items.
