DURHAM BATSMEN STRUGGLE AGAIN

-

Gloucestershire headed into day two of their Specsavers County Championship match against Durham just 38 runs behind the hosts after 15 wickets fell on day one at Chester-le-Street.

David Payne took four for 40 as Durham were dismissed for 158 in two sessions, while Matt Taylor, Ryan Higgins and Josh Shaw each claimed two wickets.

In reply, the visitors reached 120 for five at the close of play, with Matt Salisbury taking three for 18.

Higgins trapped Ryan Pringle - making his first championship appearance since 2017 - lbw for 9 before Payne piled on the misery for Division Two basement boys Durham.

In an opening spell of 8-3-11-3, Payne dismissed Durham captain Cameron Bancroft, opener Alex Lees and Gareth Harte in quick succession as the hosts collapsed to 17 for four.

Liam Trevaskis and Jack Burnham began the process of rebuilding the Durham innings before the former lofted a simple catch to Higgins at cover off the bowling of Taylor to make it 31 for five.

Burnham and Ned Eckersley resumed on 54 for five afterlunch, butthelatterwas lbw soon after the interval as he misjudged a delivery by Higgins.

Burnham and Ben Raine picked up the scoring rate as the hosts surpassed 100.

But a partnership of 46 came to an end when Burnham edged Taylor behind for 43.

Brydon Carse came and went for a golden duck, tickling a Shaw ball to James Bracey with the score at 109 for eight.

Raine and Salisbury added 29for the ninth wicket before the former edged Shaw behind for 42. Salisbury advanced the score on to 158 before he was bowled by the returning Payne.

Chris Dent and Miles Hammond opened for Gloucestershire with a very watchful stand of 27, with the latter dropped by Pringle off the bowling of Raine for nine.

He added just four more before Carse produced an inswinging yorker that trapped the left-hander lbw.

The introduction of Salisbury from the Finchale End proved fruitful as he produced a wonderful eight-over spell which saw the dismissals of Dent, George Hankins and Gareth Roderick.

But a partnership of 35 between Bracey and Benny Howell wrestled the initiative back for the visitors. Chris Rushworth had Bracey caught behind for for 35 but Howell and nightwatchmen Shaw dutifully saw out the remaining overs to leave the visitors just 38 runs behind.
