Glamorgan need good win at Durham
Glamorgan gained maximum points by defeating Leicestershire by 291 runs in their Specsavers County Championship Division Two match in Cardiff to keep their slim hopes of promotion alive.
Glamorgan still need to beat Durham – who now have nothing to play for – by a similar resounding margin at Chester-leStreet next week and hope that Gloucestershire or Northamptonshire, who play each other in the final game, drop sufficient points.
Leicestershire's only hope was to battle for a draw, but apart from Mark Cosgrove, who faced 158 balls for his 28, no one could master an accurate Glamorgan attack, where both seam and spin triumphed.
Northamptonshire took just eight overs on the final morning to wrap up a 169-run victory over Durham yesterday to take a giant stride towards promotion.
A fifth win of the season moved them second in the table with one game remaining and with Sussex losing at Derbyshire, Northamptonshire will be promoted if Leicestershire can deny Glamorgan victory in Cardiff.
Even if Glamorgan win, Northamptonshire will only need four points from their final match at Bristol to be mathematically certain of a return to Division One for the first time since 2014.
Defeat here ended Durham’s promotion hopes.
Durham captain Ned Eckersley played another stubborn innings, finishing on an unbeaten 67 from 134 balls.
But Matt Salisbury was trapped lbw and Chris Rushworth was caught at point to seal the defeat.
