Community garden

Do you enjoy gardening and have a few hours to spare? St Mary & St Peter’s Community Project, Sunderland is currently looking for volunteers to help maintain its community garden. Volunteers meet Mondays 9.30am-12pm. If you would like to help please come along any Monday, speak to volunteers and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

Music festival

Horden Parish Council presents Horden Does Oktoberfes­t, the first outdoor music festival the village has seen on October 5 in Welfare Park. It features world class tribute acts and local up-andcoming bands outdoor 2pm11pm. This is strictly an over-18s event. There will be a bar, food vendors and toilets.

Harvest festival

Humbleton Methodist Church, Ettrick Grove will hold its Harvest Festival service on October 6 at 10.45am, led by George E Brown A warm welcome invitation is given to all.

Shotton Hall

Congratula­tions to The Academy at Shotton Hall talented students who took their singing exams last term. They have done brilliantl­y! Evan Atherton achieved a distinctio­n for his grade five pop vocal, Alice Rippon and Ellie Holmes both received a distinctio­n at grade four, Abi Gray a merit for grade five musical theatre, and Ashleigh Armstrong a distinctio­n for her grade six exam.

Easington junction

Following complaints from local residents about the oneway system, officers from Easington Neighbourh­ood Policing team have been monitoring a 'no entry' junction onto the Village Green at Easington Village.

Northumber­land in Bloom

Six weeks ago judges were visiting Washington Village for the Northumber­land In Bloom contest. Volunteers from The Washington In Bloom group were hoping to retain their Gold Award status won last year. Not only did they retain the Gold, they won the overall best Village Gold for an area from Berwick down to North Yorkshire.The inspiratio­nal group does a brilliant job keeping the village looking wonderful, supported by some community-minded local businesses who help. Congratula­tions to everyone involved and thank you from the people of Washington for your hard work.

Pyjamarama

Easington Colliery Primary School says thank you to everyone who took part in Pyjamarama. The school raised £125. Book Trust ran an event called Pyjamarama which aims to inspire a love of reading in children.

Boxing tournament

Former East Durham College student Darren Surtees is making waves in the boxing industry as he confirms his place in MTK Global’s Golden Contract tournament. A former bricklayin­g student at East Durham College, he is now pursuing a career in boxing. To date he has achieved a record of 12-0 with eight KOs in the super-lightweigh­t division. The competitio­n will begin October and will end around May/June next year.

Guide Jamboree

A few months ago Hannah, a member of Park Production, Sunderland, mentioned to the committee that she had been chosen to go to The Guide Jamboree in Poland next year. She needed to raise money and asked if she could sell fudge at one of their shows to begin her fundraisin­g. They were happy to oblige. But it wasn't enough for Park Production­s. They decided to put on a showcase of talent to raise money for Hannah's trip. Members and friends took part in this fantastic night at Burn Park Methodist Church in August. There was some great talent on show, including singing, dancing, playing an instrument and performing a poem, all linked together with great comedy from hosts Dan and Cliff, aka Nick and Corey. The evening was a huge success, and they were proud to present Hannah with a cheque for £300 towards her trip.
