Teen roofer Brad ready to slate opposition
Teenage roofer Brad Hayes is building for success after bagging the first reserve spot in one of Britain’s most prestigious skills contests.
The 19-year-old from Houghton heads to Birmingham next month with the Skillbuild UK final in his sights.
Brad will be joined by fellow Newcastle College students David Crank, from Pity Me, County Durham, and Jordan Condren from Lemington, Newcastle, as the North East trio chase the chance to showcase their skills against the best in Europe.
All three roofing and slating apprentices are learning their trade with award-winning North East firm Hodgson Sayers.
Tony Lewin, principal of Newcastle College stated: “It’s fantastic that three of our students could be representing the College and the North East on the national stage.
“Both Jordan and David performed extremely well in their regional heats and they are excellent ambassadors for the College.
“Finger crosses Brad is given the opportunity to join them, but it’s an incredible achievement to be offered a reserve place at this stage in his career. He is clearly one for the future!”
Alan Bessford, Programme Leader for Roofing, Slating and Tiling at Newcastle College, said: “SkillBuild is an important programme which showcases the merits of apprenticeships and vocational education.
“The competition aspect really encourages our apprentices to up their game and help them develop lifelong skills, which I’m sure Jordan, David and Brad will benefit from in their careers.
The Skillbuild UK final will be held at the Birmingham NEC from November 20-23.
