Winthrop strikes in West End debut

There was a debut goal for Josh Winthrop as Sunderland West End claimed a 3-1 win at Willington in Division Two of the Northern League.

Jordan Lee put the hosts ahead inside the opening five minutes – but goals from Winthrop, Luke McCabe and Cameron Old were enough to give West End their fourth league win of the campaign.

Division Two leaders Redcar Athletic fell to their first league defeat of the season as they were beaten by the odd goal in five at Tow Law Town.

The two sides were level at half-time after an opener from Town striker Matty Moffat was cancelledo­ut by a Stephen Jackson equaliser.

Moffat grabbed his second of the day with 20 minutes left and Joel Pearson extended the lead to two moments later to give the hosts a lead that they would not relinquish.

MichaelWoo­dhousepull­ed one back for the leaders – but they were unable to find an equaliser in the closing stages.
