-

beat John Lynch in the mixed pairs 16-10, while Ann Upsall, Jaxon McKenna and Ian Riches beat Tony Macey 19-11 in the mixed triples.

The only loss came in the mixed fours where Jackie Tallack, Pam Byrne, Gary Farquhar and Paul Hartley narrowly lost 14-13 to Barry Hopkins.

Shields have home advantage in the next round when West Denton will provide the opposition.

Durham County will get their Liberty Trophy defence underway today as they host Yorkshire at Durham indoors (12 noon).

From the 24 that beat Berkshire in last year’s final,

Bryan Henderson (Durham), Paul Mosley (Hartlepool) and Phil Dixon (Shields) are missing.

Durham’s Phil Smithson switches to the front end and there is a county debut for South Shields’ Chris Yeomans, while his clubmate Josh Minto is a late change in place of Glenn Skipp (Hartlepool). The next round of the mixed Egham Trophy takes place tomorrow (10am) and there should be a cracking tie as Shields and Durham lock horns.
