Ford Mustang all-electric Mach-e SUV set to take on Tesla Model Y

-

Ford has made its entrance into the world of all-electric cars with the revealing of the Mustang Mach-e SUV.

It’s the first time in 55 years the Mustang has been used on anything other than a sports coupe or convertible and Ford says it’s a car for a new generation of Mustang owners.

Unlike every other previous Mustang, the Mach-e is a big, four-door five-seat SUV with a raised ride height, big boot and the option of all-wheel-drive.

It is Ford’s first all-electric model and is positioned to take on the Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla’s upcoming Model Y in the growing electric SUV market.

Entry level cars will come with a 75kWh battery and rearwheel drive, offering around 280 miles of range. A larger extended range 99kWh battery increases that to 370 miles on the WLTP cycle and both battery options will also be available with four-wheel-drive. In extended range, all-wheeldrive setup, Ford says the Mach-e will have 333bhp and 414lb/ft. Shortly after launch a high-performance Mustang Mach-E GT will join the lineup with 458bhp, 612lb/ft and a sub-five second 0-62mph time.

The Mach-e will charge at up to 150kW, potentially adding 57 miles of range from a 10-minute charge.

While it’s clearly an SUV,

Ford says the Mustang Mache has been designed to remain “true to Mustang”. Its long bonnet echoes the stretch front of the coupe and there’s a deliberate line flicking up from the rear door to emulate the coupe’s rear arches. The front is dominated by the iconic Mustang badge and at the rear the

Mach-e gets its own take on the Mustang’s trademark tri-bar rear lights.

Using the benefits of its purpose-built EV architecture, Ford says the Mach-e offers space for five adults and 400+ litres of luggage in a relatively small on-road footprint.
