Crane firm’s major plans on fire-hit site

A pensioner who was hit by a bus near the Sainsbury’s in Silksworth remains in a ‘critical condition’ after suffering injuries described as ‘life-threatenin­g’.

The 72-year-old pedestrian was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary after she was hit by a single-decker bus in Silksworth Lane, in between the Sainsbury’s and the Silksworth Sport Complex.

An investigat­ion is ongoing as officers look to determine the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the collision, which resulted in the road being closed for two-and-ahalf hours.

Emergency services were scrambled at 12.20pm on Monday, December 16, and the woman was treated at the scene before being airlifted to the Newcastle hospital.

She remains in a critical condition on Wednesday, December 18, and her injuries have been described as ‘life-threatenin­g’.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, of Northumbri­a Police’s motor patrols department, has now appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward with informatio­n.

“This was a very serious incident that has resulted in an elderly woman taken to hospital and fighting for her life,” he said. “We are offering her family support at this difficult time and we are now committed to determinin­g the events that preceded the collision.”
