No sign of deal for in-form Jon

Phil Parkinson believes Jon McLaughlin is back to his best form, but is not expecting his contract situation to be addressed while the transfer window is open.

McLaughlin’s future looked uncertain when he was dropped for Parkinson’s first game in charge against Wycombe Wanderers, with summer signing Lee Burge making a good impression whenever called upon.

He has since reclaimed his place, however, and some excellent saves in recent weeks have underlined his return to form.

McLaughlin is one of a number of players out of contract in the summer, with initial talks between Stewart Donald and his representatives failing to yield a resolution.

Donald had said he would revisit the situation after the summer window shut, but that has not happened.

“He is looking like what he is, which is an accomplished goalkeeper,” Parkinson said. “We’re pleased with Jon. “He’s another one who has built himself back up gradually to get to the top of his form and the challenge now is to stay there.

“It [his contract] has been discussed.

“At the moment the chairman is concentrating on the transfer window, but it’s a situation I’m aware of.”

Speaking at the start of the month, McLaughlin reiterated his desire to agree a new deal.

“I’ve been around long enough, I’ve moved about, I’ve always tried to be in the right place for myself, and I really hope that it continues to be here,” he said.

“I was more pleased than anyone when they came to us in the summer and made the noises about wanting me to stay long term.

“It’s a huge club with so much potential.

“I’ve moved around plenty before, for myself and the family, that’s not easy.

“We made this move because we felt it was somewhere we could potentially stay for the rest of my career, and help ride this wave back up to the very top.

“From my point of view, we’re not looking to jump ship just because everything has not been rosy for a short period.

“I’m still one that can hopefully be part of the group that turns this around and gets the positive feeling back, and drives us back up the leagues.”
