Man, 48, fights for his life after crash

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after crashing his car in South Tyneside.

Shortly before 3am on Thursday, January 17, a car crashed on New Road in Boldon.

The white Mercedes had crashed into some metal railings outside Boldon School.

Emergency services were sent to the scene and the 48-year-old driver was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

Police have confirmed that he remains in a critical but stable condition and his family are receiving support by experts.

An investigat­ion into the circumstan­ces are ongoing and Northumbri­a Police are now appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may have CCTV or dash cam footage to come forward to assist officers with their inquiries. Sergeant Lee Butler, of Northumbri­a Police’s Motor Patrols department, said: “This was a serious collision that has left a man with significan­t injuries in hospital.

“The man’s next of kin have been notified and his family continue to be given support by our experience­d family liaison officers.

“We are committed to finding out the cause of the collision, and we are now appealing for anybody who witnessed the incident or who saw the Mercedes in the moments before to get in touch.

“We’d also ask anybody who lives in the area to check their CCTV or dash cam footage.”
