‘Thrown out’ man banned from driving

A man has been banned from driving for three years – and for the second time for getting behind the wheel of his car after being thrown out of a hotel.

Liam Humes, 31, jumped into his Renault Scenic motor after being given the boot from the Roker Hotel, Sunderland, on Sunday, December 1, South Tyneside Magistrates’Court heard.

Police were called to Roker Terrace and a breath test revealed Hum es, of Wi ge on Close, Ayt on, Washington, had 62mcgs of alcohol in 100mls of breath. The legal limit is 35mcgs.

Prosecutor Paul Anderson told the court: “The facts of the case are very straightforward. He is at the Roker Hotel. He is being escorted from the premises and says that he’s not leaving without his car.

“Police arrive and he’s around twice the drink-drive limit. He chose to make no reply in interview .”

Magistrate s were told Hum es had been given a three year ban for drink-driving in 2014.

Jason Smith, defending, said: “He said that he was out and having drinks. They threw him out and he had no means of getting home.

“He had a threeyear ban in 2014. He’s always complied with what the court have said to him.”

Mr Smith said Humes does not respond well to stressful situations, something he insisted he found himself in at the hotel. He added: “He believes that at that stage he had no other choice because he couldn’ t think past his immediate problem .”

Humes, who pleaded guilty to drink-driving, was also fined £276 and must pay £85 court costs and a £32 victim surcharge.
