Teenage girl dies following collision
Police have named a teenage girl who has sadly died almost a week after she was knocked down on a major Sunderland road.
Northumbria Police has said 15- year-old Alisha Websterhas died as a result of the injuries she sustained following the collision on Wessington Way shortly after 4.30pm on Wednesday, February 19.
The road was closed until after midnight that day as inquiries were launched into the crash, which happened while she was on foot and involved a car.
She was airlifted to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary by the Great North Air Ambulance with life-threatening injuries.
Yesterday the force confirmed Alisha died as a result of those injuries on Tuesday.
Her family have been notified and are currently being supported by specialist officers at this time.
Sergeant Matt Sykes, of Northumbria Police’s motor patrols department, said: “This was a devastating incident which has sadly resulted in the death of a 15-year-old girl.
“Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time and I would ask that their privacy is respected as they cometotermswith their loss.
“We are committed to finding out the circumstances surrounding the incidentand an investigation is ongoing to determine events directly before the collision happened.
“I would like to thank members of the public who have already come forward to assist with our enquiries but we would still urge anyone who witnessed the collision, who is yet to contact police, to get in touch as soon as possible.”
