Hartlepool Workies were also in Kenny Ball Cup action and lost 3-1 at Ferryhill Greyhound.
On a quagmire of a pitch they made a poor start, which ultimately cost them. They gave the ball away on the edge of their box on 10 minutes and the hosts went in front before doubling their lead with a hotly contested second.
Workies responded with Stu Greig and Lee Crosby going close, but they lost Matty Taylor just before the break with a dislocated shoulder. Then right on half-time Ferryhill made it 3-0 with a great strike.
Workies improved in the second half and pulled a goal back when a ball over the top saw Alan Hoey outpace two defenders to slot home into the bottom corner. Crosby hit the post, but Workies could not make any further inroads into their deficit. Greig starred along with Brian Chambers, Crosby and Andy McKenna.
In the league, an injurytime goal earned Sunderland
Willow Pond a point from a 2-2 draw with Hartlepool Vets in Division Four.
With the wind behind them in the first half the Vets were on top for the most part, but it was the Sunderland side who went ahead. Burns saved a Golightly shot, but the ball was only palmed into the path of Grieves, who made no mistake from close range.
Undeterred, the Vets were level within five minutes as Simon Dove’s corner was lashed home by Tony Ingledew. And as half-time approached they went in front in similar fashion with Darren Hart firing home from Dove’s flag kick.
The second half was a different story as the home side took advantage of the conditions to push their opponents back. The Vets defended well, but right at the death Pond struck to earn a draw. Alan Harle starred for Vets.
Hartlepool Catholic Club lost 2-0 at Redcar Town in a Division Two match played in atrocious conditions.
Things only got worse when a Catholic player was sent off. Chris Tierney starred.
