Mags voted third best in League One

-

Chris Maguire has been named in FourFourTwo magazine’s prestigious EFL Top 50 player list.

The annual list is compiled after votes from supporters of every club in the Football League are cast and collated.

Maguire finished 25th in the poll, and was named as the third-best player in League One.

Portsmouth winger Ronan Curtis finished one place higher in the poll, while Ivan Toney finished 14th.

Maguire has enjoyed one of his most productive seasons in the current campaign, with his tally of 19 goals and assists bettered only by Toney.

He enjoyed one of his most consistent spells in Sunderland’s improved run under Phil Parkinson, posing a significant set-piece threat and thriving as one of the inside forwards in a 3-4-3.

Parkinson credited his improvement to a renewed focus on his fitness and conditioning.

“Everybody knows with Chris that he’s always striving for that consistency level, and he’s starting to show that,” Parkinson said.

“If you get yourself in good physical condition, you can keep producing the performances and I’m delighted for him because he’s got his reward in his performances.”

Maguire is one of a number of Sunderland players out of contract at the end of June, and has already stated his desire to earn a new deal at the club.

“I want to stay here for as long as I can, so it is up to me to prove to people I deserve the right to be here,” he said.

“This is a great club and I have enjoyed every moment that I have been here.”
