‘I'm confident we can stay up’ - Big Al’s first team selection

teams' (situations) have gone against us as well, so we know we are in a fight and we will give it a fight.

"I enjoyed it, I'm putting a brave face on as I'm very disappointed.

“But I enjoyed the build up (to the match) and would have enjoyed (the day) a hell of a lot more if we had a point or three.

"The linesman has made a mistake (over a Michael Owen 'goal' adjudged not to have crossed the line) but we all make them.

"What it might have done was give us a rousing last five or 10 minutes, but it was certainly not his fault that we lost the game today.

"I've been asked to take over for eight games and that's the club's intention and to keep the club in the Premier League.

"You can never tell what will happen in the future but I'll be back on Match of the Day next year. Some will be pleased, some won't!

"We have to get our first win and see where that gets us."

So, 11 years on, what happened to everyone involved?

This is the Newcastle team that day, and where they are now...

Harper joined Steve Bruce’s coaching staff in November and was poised to act as Northern Ireland’s goalkeeping coach for Euro 2020.

He has also been inducted into the Newcastle United Foundation Hall of Fame.

The Tyne-Wear derby hero last played for League One side Fleetwood Town last season - teaming up with former Magpie Joey Barton. Retirement has been rumoured but nothing has been made official yet.

‘Sunday, Monday, Habib Beye…’ The former full-back made quite the impression in his two years at St James’s Park and since retiring in 2012, the 42-year-old has gone on to work as a TV and radio pundit in France.

At 38 years of age, the Argentine is still lacing up his boots for his boyhood club San Lorenzo - the team he left Newcastle to join in 2016. He is appearing regularly, too, featuring 16 times from a possible 23 this season.

The Spaniard was forced into early retirement in 2017 due to a persistent knee problem before being diagnosed with a brain tumour. A year on from his diagnosis, Enrique thankfully received the all-clear in April 2019.

United’s very own superhero for several different reasons.

Gutierrez has suffered two serious knee injuries in the last two years but the 36-year-old is determ ined to keep playing in Argentina, whether that be at current club Banfield or elsewhere.

Nolan, after trying his hand in management with Leyton Orient and Notts County - who he guided to the League Two play-offs - is back in the Premier League as a first team coach under David Moyes at West Ham United.

The 45-year-old is back at Manchester United as head coach of their youth academy. However, it isn't just onfield matters Butt deals with - he co-owns League Two side Salford City alongside other members of the ‘Class of 92’.

He was signed on a free from Germany, you know. The Dane appears in just about every one of Newcastle fans’ away days songs and while he keeps a close eye on the Magpies, the 40-year-old is Reserve Team Coach at Rangers.

Owen works as a pundit for BT Sport and recently released his autobiography called: ‘Michael Owen: Reboot’. Indeed, he slated his time at Newcastle at just about every opportunity. And he wonders why he isn’t very popular on Tyneside…

Twenty-one or 28? Well, the Nigerian, 11 years on from leaving Newcastle, is reportedly on the verge of re-signing for Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua having spent almost two years on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

Duff initially joined Celtic in 2019, who he supported as a kid, to coach the reserves but with Brendan Rodgers moving to manage Leicester City, the 41-year-old was quickly promoted to first team coach to help form Neil Lennon's backroom staff.

Guthrie had spells at Reading and Blackburn Rovers before spending time in Indonesia with Mitra Kukar. He is now back on English soil, however, sporting the colours of League Two outfit Walsall.

Carroll made an emotional return to Newcastle last summer but further time on the sideline has limited his impact. It remains to be seen whether he will be offered a new contract, which is due to expire in the coming months.
