A Sunderland great-grandmother is afraid to stay in her own home after cruel vandals smashed her window showering her with glass.

Mary Bland is petrified to stayinherownhomeafterthe terrifying attack on her home in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The 70-year-old’s family, who can’t even give her a hug to comfort her due to he current lockdown rules, are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

It is believed three people, including one on a motorbike or off-road bike, were in the street at the time and had thrown the concrete rock through her window.

Her son, Eddy Bland, said: “They threw a large rock, which was bigger than a brick, through her window while she was sat there.

“She heard something outside first, she thinks it was a smaller rock that hit the frame.

“Then a huge rock came through the window.

“I don’t understand why my mam is being targeted.

“She’s absolutely terrified now. We’re not a family that have enemies, especially my mam.

“I don’t know what sort of person could do something like that for no reason.

“The light was on so they knew someone was sat there.”

Her family have been to check on her and spoke to her from across the garden to keep in line with the current restrictions.

Eddy, who posted an appeal on Facebook, is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward and speak to police.

The community has rallied behind the family and Callum Watson, who owns You’ve Been Framed – Windows and Doors, has offered to replace the window free of charge.

Mary is insured but, because of the ongoing pandemic, the insurance company weren’t sure when the window would be replaced.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “At 12.30am on Wednesday, police received a report that a window had been damaged on Lowland Close in Sunderland.

“It was reported that a piece of concrete had been thrown through the window causing significant damage.

“Inquiries are ongoing to trace those responsible.

“Anyone with any information is asked to contact police using reference number 31 15/03/20.”
