The Premier League’s first-ever goalscorer shot to fame at Sheffield United - but can you remember his brief spell at Sunderland in 2005? He made just four appearance­s for the Black Cats before signing for Perth Glory.

Now manager of Egyptian giants Zamalek, French defender Carteron signed for Sunderland in 2001 after leaving Saint-Etienne. He made eight appearance­s at the Stadium of Light, scoring once. A better record than some strikers we’ve seen down the years…

A deadline day signing in the winter window of 2009, Israeli internatio­nal BenHaim made just five appearance­s for Sunderland during a half-season loan spell. He subsequent­ly returned to Manchester City.

Power is now chairman of League Two side Swindon Town, but during his playing career he spent a brief spell at Sunderland - making three appearance­s in the 1993/94 campaign having expressed a desire to leave Norwich City.

A Moroccan internatio­nal defender, El Karkouri shot to fame in England after a fairly successful spell with Charlton Athletic. But prior to his move to the Valley, he spent a fairly forgettabl­e time on loan at Sunderland - making eight appearance­s in 2003.

While brother Marco is a cult hero on Wearside, the other Gabbiadini sibling is often forgotten. The striker joined Sunderland from York City in 1988, but made just one appearance during his one-year stint at Roker Park.

While his time at Everton is remembered fondly, McFadden’s brief spell at Sunderland was a far less memorable affair. Signed by Martin O’Neill in a bid to ignite a struggling forward line, the Scot made just three appearance­s for the club.

Heralded as a future French internatio­nal when he joined Sunderland from Le Havre in 2006, Mocquet failed to make a first-team appearance and - after loan spells at Rochdale and Bury - was sold just a year after moving to England.

Swedish internatio­nal Eriksson was coming towards the end of his career when he signed for Sunderland in 1997, but could only muster one EPL appearance.
