Completing the season 'dangerous' - Curtis

-

Portsmouth ace Ronan Curtis admits that completing the League One season could be ‘dangerous’ – as plans to facilitate the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign being played behind closed doors look set to be accelerated.

The EFL remain keen to complete the current season once it is safe to do so, and are putting plans in place to play all remaining fixtures in front of empty stadiums.

Those plans received backing from the government earlier this week, and could be brought closer to fruition should lockdown rules be relaxed this weekend.

But while the governing bodiesaremovingtowardsareturn, Curtis admits that many in the third tier are ‘worried’ about taking to the field.

“As footballers, we are worriedaboutthis,”hesaid, speaking to the Portsmouth News.

“Look at how many people have died, it’s your health, it's dangerous. Of course you should be cautious. Obviously we want it to go away and that cantaketime, youhavetowait.

“We would love to be back playing, but there’s different stuff going about.

“Don’t forget you are on the pitchwithdifferentpeople, you are going to come across them, put your hands on them. It is dangerous, this virus is in the air and you can catch it.”

Sunderland and their League One rivals are currently waiting for the EFL to announce their next move.

But while Curtis feels that the season ‘needs’ to be completed from a sporting perspective, he is struggling to see how it could be completed under the current climate.

“I can't see the season going back, but at the same time it needs to go back. We just have to wait for others to come up with a plan.”
