Investigat­ion into death of man with serious injuries

as a police investigat­ion into the man’s death was launched.

Northumbri­a Police confirmed that the presence of police and the forensics team was in connection with the death of the man.

Police were initially called in the early hours of Saturday to a report of concern for a man in Avondale Avenue.

Emergency services attended and the man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Sadly, he died as a result of his injuries.

Detective Chief Inspector Sharon Chatterton said: “A team of experience­d detectives are carrying out an investigat­ion into this incident as we look to ensure anyone responsibl­e is brought to justice.

“Specialist officers are currently supporting the family and we would ask that their privacy be respected at this time.

"We believe those involved were known to each other. Officers will remain in the area to carry out inquiries and offer any reassuranc­e to the public.”

Detectives, uniformed officers and forensics teams remained at the scene yesterday, where bins could be seen sealed off with plastic and police tape.

Officers are now appealing for anyone with informatio­n, or who may have witnessed the incident, to get in touch.

The North East Ambulance Service said it sent a doctor, a rapid response paramedic and a paramedic ambulance after being called by police at around 3am.

*Police arrested three men in connection with the incident and they were still assisting police with their inquiries when the Echo went to press.
