Coronaviru­s claims another patient

Another patient being cared for by the city’s health trust has died after testing positive for coronaviru­s.

According to figures released yesterday, one additional coronaviru­s-related death has been recorded at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

The total number of deaths at the trust now stands at 323.

In total, 1,378 people who had tested positive for coronaviru­s have died across the North East’s hospital trusts – a rise of one since Sunday.

NHS England confirmed that nationally, a further 59 people, who tested positive for COVID-19 have died, bringing the total number of confirmed reported deaths in hospitals in England to 27,490.

Patients were aged between 34 and 100 and three patients – aged between 54 and 68 – had known underlying health conditions.

A small number of deaths which occurred in London hospitals have not been reported and will be announced in the coming days.

Deaths are reported by trust only and there is no breakdown of deaths per hospital.

According to the latest figures released by Public Health England on Sunday, there are 10,357 confirmed cases of coronaviru­s in the NorthEast–arise of eight from Saturday. Here is a breakdown of the cases by local authority area: County Durham: 2,032; Sunderland: 1,385; Newcastle: 1,069; Gateshead: 1,009; Northumber­land: 1,032; South Tyneside: 746; Middlesbro­ugh: 684; Stockton: 614; North Tyneside: 623; Redcar &Cleveland :427; D arlington: 396; Hartlepool: 339.
