Majority of people have pulled together

-

It’s been a challenging few months for everybody with the Coronavirus epidemic restrictions having a significant impact on the lives of residents and businesses across our region.

However, slowly but surely, we are making the first small, cautious steps towards normality as the lockdown, imposed by the Government due to the pandemic, gradually eases.

Nowhere has the impact been more obvious than in our town and city centres in recent months.

So it is great to see shoppers back on our high streets – socially distanced, of course – and our businesses starting to trade once more.

Personal responsibility is now key as we all continue to try to work together in order to protect the most vulnerable in our communities.

For those who are able to leave their homes and see loved ones again, please think carefully about where you are going and how you will be able to keep your distance from others when you get there.

From a policing perspective, at this time of year we are usually gearing up towards some of the flagship events of the summer.

But unfortunately, due to the pandemic, organisers of the Sunderland Airshow, South Tyneside Festival, Great North Run and various other such popular events have had to make the difficult decision to cancel this year.

These events so often showcase the very best of this region – its community spirit, friendliness and willingness to all pull together with a smile and hard work.

Those are qualities that my officers and I have seen over the last few weeks and months.

During unprecedented times and real adversity, I’m proud that the overwhelming majority of people have stood up to the test – and showcased those very qualities.

Stay safe, and look after each other.
