Ex-Cats boss is targeting a return to England

-

Gus Poyet is targeting a return to management in England – but admits it can be “difficult” for managers to find work in the country after heading abroad.

Poyet, whose first job in management came at Brighton & Hove Albion, led Sunderland to the Capital One Cup Final in 2014 while also engineering a remarkable escape from relegation.

After leaving the Stadium of Light in 2015, the Uruguayan embarked on a number of roles overseas – taking in spells at AEK Athens, Real Betis, Shanghai Shenhua and Bordeaux.

He has been out of work since leaving the French side in 2018, but is now targeting a return to England.

But Poyet knows that will be easier said than done, having opened up on the challenges of landing a job in an interview with Sky Sports.

"Yes,” said the former Chelsea midfielder, when asked if he would like his next job to be in England.

"I enjoy watching different English teams.”

But he admits its may not be easy.

"When you get out of the circle, it is difficult to get back,” he continued.

"Even if your numbers, your achievements, are good or bad, when you are in the circle and working, people look out for you more than when you are not.

"I have been a little more selective now, the main thing for me is the people I want to work with. Once you know the people, what they want and if they know me and who I am, that is the most important thing, not the name or the history of the club. I don't care about that.”
