Sunderland transfer talk: Keepers, McGeady and an Everton starlet

-

With the new League One season now just over a month away, transfer talk is continuing to dominate the discussion at the Stadium of Light.

Here, we take a look at the latest news from around Sunderland AFC – including some deal updates… who reports claim was on the radar of Sunderland.

The former Northampton Town stopper had a number of suitors this summer, including clubs in the Championship, but the East Anglian Daily Times claim he has put pen to paper at Portman Road.

They also suggest that Sunderland were one of the sides interested in the Welshman, but add that

Phil Parkinson’s side are now likely to turn their attention to Remi Matthews, who has been released by Bolton Wanderers.

Any chance of Charlton agreeing a permanent deal for Aiden McGeady look to have faded – after the Addicks were placed under fresh financial controls.

After spending the second half of last season on loan with the Addicks, there was hope that the 34-yearold could find himself a new permanent home, having fallen out of favour with Parkinson.

And while it was unlikely that Charlton would launch a move to land McGeady on a permanent basis following their relegation to League One, any propsect of a move now looks minimal after the club were issued with new financial guidelines by the EFL.

Lee Bowyer wasn’t able to seal any deals in the early weeks of the window, with the club under a contract embargo, and South London Press report that while the club can now offer contracts to players, they are capped at a fee of £1,300 per week.

That limit would likely fall well below McGeady’s expected salary.

Sunderland are understood to have taken former Everton defender Morgan Feeney on trial.

The youngster, who has made just three senior appearances in his career, is one option under consideration as Parkinson looks to bolster his options.
