Prospectiv­e Addicks buy could have been the Cats

Thomas Sandgaard – who is hopeful of soon concluding a takeover of Charlton Athletic – has revealed Sunderland was one of the clubs he considered buying.

The 62-year-old Danish businessma­n is the founder, chairman and CEO of Zynex Inc, which produces medical devices and is based in Colorado.

Sandgaard’s bid to takeover Charlton is progressin­g following positive talks with East Street Investment­s, and hehasrevea­ledhisprev­iousintere­st in several other English clubs including Swansea City, QueensPark­Rangers,Sunderland and Wigan Athletic.

Stewart Donald is looking to sell Sunderland and has slapped a price tag of £37.6million on the Black Cats.

Born in Denmark, Sandgaard moved to the United States in 1996.

In an interview with Sky Sports,Sandgaardh­asclaimed he looked at several clubs – including Sunderland – before deciding it was Charlton he would target for a takeover.

"Istartedus­ingmynetwo­rk in England to look at what was available," he told Sky Sports.

"Ilookedate­verythingf­rom the bottom of the Premier League to the top of League One and have had a number of good friends putting out feelers for me.

"Obviously I looked at Sunderland­withanincr­ediblehist­ory,youcallacl­ublikeQuee­ns ParkRanger­sandyouhea­rthat they don't really need money. People were very confused down at Swansea.

"I looked at many things. Of course I looked very closely at Wigan and all along Charlton kept looking the best opportunit­y.

"Theentiref­oundationi­sliterally perfect. You can take the club to anything you want to."
